This book deserves a five star for me, as it checkmarks everything I enjoy in young adult fantasy novels. Honestly, I love it! It also touches a few strong themes, such as prejudice and social disparities. This book can be dark at times and contains a few gruesome details.

This book wraps up nicely, but I can’t wait to read the next installment. I also love that the romance between two beloved characters broke a few standards. Fie is a fierce character with honorable goals but is thrown into a fight that isn’t hers to begin with. As for the characters, I love Fie and Tavin from the very beginning. The prose is also beautiful, and the book is a true page-turner. The pacing is great, and even though at times the story slows down, the world makes you want to know more. It makes you want to know more about the history of the magic and its people, or even how magic impacts the characters’ lives. The magic system is different in its execution. While the caste system is not unique, it is well thought out. The world-building is extremely well done.
